“Ne Zha 2” has soared to the top of the Chinese box office, becoming the highest-grossing film in the country’s history.

The animated blockbuster has raked in over RMB 6.6 billion ($905 million), according to ticketing and data firm Maoyan.

Released on January 29 to coincide with the Lunar New Year festivities, Ne Zha 2 captivated audiences nationwide, playing a key role in the holiday’s record-breaking box office total of $1.3 billion—an 18.8% increase from the previous year.

The film has easily surpassed the previous record set by the 2021 war epic The Battle at Lake Changjin ($802 million) and overtaken past top earners like Wolf Warrior 2 (2017, $791 million) and Hi, Mom (2021, $752 million).

Even after the Lunar New Year, Ne Zha 2 continues to dominate, with projections from Maoyan suggesting it could reach a staggering $1.37 billion. If achieved, it would become the first film ever to surpass $1 billion in a single market.
